Google AI Mode ads and paid search: what changed in 2026

Ads are live in AI Mode in the US, AI Max is switching on in UK accounts, and exact match is being tested. Here's what it means for you.

Short answer: ads already appear inside Google's AI Mode in the US, served automatically from Performance Max, Shopping, broad match and AI Max campaigns. In September 2026, Google also began a small test serving ads from ordinary exact and phrase match campaigns in AI Mode. In the UK, AI Mode is live but ads in it have not yet rolled out, while AI Max has been switching on in UK accounts since 1 September.

Google's AI Mode, the conversational tab that answers questions instead of listing links, reached the UK in July 2025. For a year UK advertisers could mostly ignore it. That's changing fast. Here's what's happened, and what to do before AI Mode ads arrive here.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what's the difference?

AI Mode is where search behaviour is changing fastest, and where the old keyword model fits worst. Someone asking "what's the best CRM for a 10-person agency that already uses Google Workspace" isn't typing a keyword anyone bids on.

How do ads get into Google AI Mode?

Until September 2026 there were only a few routes in. Ads were served automatically from campaigns advertisers were already running:

Google matches ads to the whole conversation rather than a single query. There's no separate campaign to build, no opt-out if you're eligible, and no separate reporting line showing how your ads performed in AI Mode.

Google tests exact and phrase match ads in AI Mode (September 2026)

On 3 September 2026, paid search specialist Anthony Higman reported that ordinary Search campaigns using exact and phrase match were serving in AI Mode. The next day, Google's Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed it was a "small experiment" that had recently started.

The key detail is the limit Google put on it: exact and phrase match keywords can trigger text ads in AI Mode only where the user shows explicit, direct intent. AI Max and Performance Max remain Google's route for longer, conversational questions. Google hasn't said which countries are included or when the test ends. Search Engine Land has the full story.

Why it matters: if the test becomes permanent, tightly controlled keyword campaigns get a path into AI Mode without handing everything to automation. It also means an exact match keyword's numbers could quietly start including AI Mode traffic, with no way to separate the two in reporting.

AI Max: the part that's already in your account

AI Max for Search came out of beta in April 2026 and is now the default for new Search campaigns. It adds three things to a normal Search campaign:

Between 1 and 30 September 2026, Google automatically upgraded Search campaigns using campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets to AI Max, including in the UK. Dynamic Search Ads are being folded in too.

So even though AI Mode ads haven't reached the UK yet, the machinery that will serve them is already live in UK accounts.

Does paid advertising influence AI search answers?

No. Buying ads doesn't buy you a mention in the AI-written answer itself. Google keeps ads separate from the answer and labels them as sponsored. To be cited in AI Mode or AI Overviews, you need content Google trusts and can quote, which is an SEO job, not a paid one. We cover how to earn those citations in AI search optimisation.

What to do now

1. Check what's changed. Look for Search campaigns moved onto AI Max in September, and any Dynamic Search Ads that have been converted. Note the switch dates so you can compare before and after.

2. Take a baseline. Export 90 days of performance by campaign: cost per conversion, conversion rate and, most importantly, lead quality or revenue. When AI Mode ads reach the UK, you'll want to know what changed and why.

3. Read search terms weekly for a month. AI Max widens where you show. Add negatives quickly, and exclude brand terms from non-brand campaigns if AI Max starts cannibalising them.

4. Control your landing pages. If final URL expansion is on, exclude pages that should never get paid traffic, such as careers pages, blog posts or expired offers. Or switch expansion off where the landing page matters.

5. Keep your best exact match campaigns. Given the September test, don't dismantle well-performing exact and phrase match campaigns just to chase AI Mode. They may get there on their own terms.

6. Upgrade your conversion data. Import offline conversions from your CRM, or use enhanced conversions for leads, so Google learns which clicks became customers. It's the biggest lever you have over any automated campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Are there ads in Google AI Mode in the UK?

Not yet, as of late September 2026. Ads in AI Mode are live in the US, and Google has said more countries are coming.

Which campaigns are eligible for AI Mode ads?

Performance Max, Shopping, broad match Search with Smart Bidding and AI Max campaigns. Since September 2026, exact and phrase match campaigns are also being tested, for searches with clear intent only.

Can I opt out of AI Mode ads?

Not separately. If your campaign type is eligible, your ads can appear in AI Mode, and there's currently no separate AI Mode reporting.

Was my campaign upgraded to AI Max automatically?

If it used campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets, it was likely upgraded between 1 and 30 September 2026. Check the campaign settings and change history.

The bottom line

Paid search is moving from "which keywords do I bid on?" to "what signals am I giving Google?" The advertisers who come out ahead will have clean conversion data, clear landing pages and someone actually reading the search terms. Meta is making the same move with placements, which we cover in Meta removing placement controls.
